With Julian Onderdonk – Poetry in Paint

Guest Speaker Rebecca Huffstutler Norton, Executive Director of the Frontier Times Museum in Bandera, Texas

When Julian Onderdonk died at the early age of 40, Texas lost one of its most promising painters.  Born into a prominent family of artists in San Antonio, Julian showed early in life the artistic talent that would continue to captivate art lovers almost 100 years after his death.  The beauty of the South Texas countryside offered him boundless opportunities to paint directly from nature.  In his lifetime and beyond, he became famous for his hauntingly beautiful depictions of bluebonnets.  He became known as the “Bluebonnet Painter,” a title he despised because of the plethora of amateurish bluebonnet paintings produced by less competent artists.  This lecture will explore Julian’s early years growing up in San Antonio to his return to his beloved hometown after studying with William Merritt Chase in New York and the legacy he has left to the cultural heritage of Texas.

Lunch is catered by Hester's Cafe: Chicken Caprese, rice and broccoli, with a Lemon Sandy cookie, salad and tea
